Having position, title, rank, or degree doesn't qualify anyone to lead others and the ability doesn't come automatically from age or experience. No one can be given the right to lead. The right to lead can only be earned.
The key to becoming an effective leader is not to focus on making other people follow you, but instead by making yourself the kind of person they want to follow.
In my experience, there are very few people in the position of power who truly earned that right. Where do you stand? Have you ever thought about this question? If not, you should.
Below are 4 key areas you can start to work on in order to earn the trust and respect you would like to have:
- Cultivate the Right Attitude- Point a finger at yourself first and take full responsibility of the situation.
- Communicate Simply & Authentically- Listen with purpose and realize your actions communicate much more powerfully than your words.
- Engage & Mobilize Your Team- Get to know your team, set clear expectations and offer constructive feedback. Ask them how you can be better.
- Give Away Your Power- You will become a better leader by sharing whatever power you have, not by saving it all for yourself. If you use your power to empower others, your leadership will extend far beyond your grasp.
